Dementia is not a disease in itself, but a symptom of various underlying conditions. It is characterised by a decline in brain function and is often associated with a range of diseases, of which there are over 100. The four main diseases that cause dementia are Alzheimer's disease, Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), vascular dementia, and Lewy body dementia.
